I’ve spoken before about my love of our bed.

My boy and I bought it for our first home, 20 years ago, and it’s been with us ever since.

Forged out of heavy wrought iron it’s HUGE — a super-sized, superking bedframe — the dimensions of which are both a blessing and a curse.

Blessing: you can sleep without touching. Particularly good during hot-spells like the one we’re enjoying at the moment.

And even if one of us is suffering with a bout of insomnia, the other can be blissfully unaware.

Plus it’s brilliant in a morning, when our bed-space is invaded by our two, energetic, little man-cubs.

Curse: It’s so big, it’s dictated house purchases (if the bedroom can’t take the bed, we don’t buy the house).

And I’m not joking.

When we first bought the bed, we owned a first-floor flat in a Victorian mansion block in London. The bedroom was so enormous, it swallowed up all of the furniture and made our gigantic bed look fairly dinky.

Roll on a few years, and we now live in a grade 2 listed cottage, built in the 17th century.

Space is at a premium, and in order to get the bed up the stairs, we had to take the bannisters off and — even though we managed to get it in our bedroom — it was still a pretty tight fit.

But finally, after 7 years of living here, we’ve decided to put our beautiful bed into storage.

The Night Shift

When the lovely team at Wayfair asked if we’d like to test out their new Nora mattress, we figured that this would be the perfect opportunity to downsize, so we’ve bought a new bed-frame to go with it.

We chose an ottoman style — which means you can hide all the detritus that usually lives underneath the bed inside the bed (winner) — and it’s a kingsize (so a full foot smaller than our old bed).

Plus, instead of metal, we thought we’d buck the trend and go for an upholstered style.

It’s poles apart from our lovely old bed frame but it’s such a nice change.

It reminds me of smart boutique hotels, I’ve stayed in, and it’s given our bedroom a totally different feel.

So, it’s all change on the night-shift, as I have a brand new sleeping partner.

Introducing The Nora Mattress from Wayfair

‘Nora’ is one of the new wave of mattresses that comes in a box and — when you live in a house like ours, that has fairly difficult access —  being able to carry a kingsize mattress up the stairs is such a selling point!

It’s crazy to think that the average 75 years old has spent around 25 of those years in bed asleep;(assuming they’ve not been kept awake at night by an uncomfortable mattress).

We’ve had just a couple of weeks, so far, to get used to our new bed.

I seem to have been sleeping better than Mr D; the jury’s out whether it’s the smaller bed, the sultry summer nights, or the mattress that’s keeping him awake.

But, one thing’s for sure, we are all really enjoying putting Nora through her paces!

Having to spend time in a comfy bed — all in the name of ‘research’ — is brilliant.
