The Princess and the Pea {Featuring Button and Sprung} AD

When I was a little girl, I used to have a beautifully illustrated storybook called The Princess and the Pea.

The premise of the story — for those of you that can’t remember — was this:

The Princess and the Pea

There was once a handsome prince who wanted to marry a princess.

Easier said than done though — as there seemed to be a shortage of decent girls in Fairyland— and he had huge difficulty finding a suitable wife.

The prince couldn’t be certain that the women he met were real princesses because they always seemed to be flawed.

Some were too fat, too thin or a bit plain.

Others had awful table manners and, as a result, he began to despair that he’d ever meet ‘the one’.

Then one stormy night, a young woman turned up at the castle — absolutely soaked to the skin — seeking shelter from the rain.

She claimed to be a princess, so the prince’s mother decided to test her by placing a pea — covered with 20 mattresses and 20 feather eiderdowns — on the bed she’d prepared for their guest to sleep in that night.

In the morning, the young woman told her hosts that she’d had a rubbish sleep, as she’d been kept awake by something hard in the bed (not a euphemism by the way).

The prince was delighted.

Only a real princess would have been able to feel a pea through such a lot of bedding, so the prince and the sensitive, insomniac princess married right away (naturally, it is a fairytale after all).

And they all lived happily ever after.

The end.

Beautiful Beds For Real-Life Princesses

Ah… wouldn’t it be lovely if real life were this straightforward!! There would be no need for dating websites, that’s for sure ;)

I LOVED this book.

I used to pore over the pictures — beautiful illustrations — and the thing I liked the very best was the bed, that the unassuming traveller was given for the night.

It was beautiful; totally unlike any that my childish eyes had ever seen before.

Not your average bedframe — with a hard, rectangular headboard — or a divan-style bed, that my mum and dad were so fond of.

Nope. This bed was a thing of beauty.

It was a fabulous shape and gently dominated the room in the prince’s palace and looked really comfy (even if it did have a pea under the mattress).

So imagine my delight to find a real-life company that makes the most gorgeous fairytale beds.

They’re called Button and Sprung and they produce quality handmade beds and mattresses.

There are 9 different pocket-sprung mattresses and 11 glorious bed styles in their current range; all beautifully crafted using traditional methods.

Each one has a ten year guarantee and they’ll deliver — and assemble — your new bed in a convenient 2 hour slot.

Unlike the prince in the story, Button and Sprung will also make every effort to ensure you’ll have the best night’s sleep possible (no lumps, bumps or peas in their mattresses). And you know how much I like a good mattress!

And if, after 100 nights, you decide that your new bed isn’t just right… not too hard, too soft (sorry — wrong fairytale — isn’t that Goldilocks??) you can return it for a full refund.

No quibbles.

Sounds too good to be true doesn’t it but, happily, this is no fairy story.
